The Good Part – Sophie Cousens

What if you could fast forward to your happy ever after?

Lucy Young is twenty-six and fed up with life, so when she stumbles upon a wishing machine, she wishes to skip ahead. When she wakes up the next day to find herself married with two children, Lucy can’t believe it’s real…especially when she looks in the mirror and sees her forty-something face staring back. As Lucy navigates her future life, she soon realises that along with the good part, there are harder surprises too. Does she want to go back to being the girl she once was? Or is the good part bright enough to stay in?

This month’s book club pick is one I would definitely be drawn to and I’m so glad it was picked. It felt like right book right time.

Lucy is frustrated with life, mid-twenties and she is living in a rubbish flat share, has no love life and isn’t progressing in her career, so when she comes across a wishing machine she doesn’t hesitate to wish she could skip to the bit where her life was ‘sorted’. The next morning she wakes up to find herself married with two children and that she doesn’t remember the last sixteen years. As she uncovers her future life she realises that with the good bits comes the hard bits. Lucy has to decide whether she wants to return to woman she was before or embrace her future life.

I really enjoyed the concept of this book, if you had the chance would you skip forward to the ‘good bit’ of your life? I am sure there have been times for most of us when we have been frustrated with life where we wish we could. This story shows us what this could be like, is it worth missing all the memories made along the way to get there?

I loved watching Lucy come to terms with this new reality and uncovering all the things that had passed to lead her here and to see her having to rebuild a relationship with her husband and her children. I found the connection with Felix adorable.

Sophie’s writing style is not only absorbing and easy to read but it also showcases the warmth and humour in the story. I think this book is a reminder that we should all enjoy the journey that is life, and stop wishing it away.

This is my first book by Sophie Cousens that I have read but I will be definitely be picking up more.
